500 years after the death of Il Giorgione (Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco, c. 1477/8 – 1510), the city of Castelfranco commemorates the genius of its favorite son. The celebration of this great painter from the Venetian School of the Italian Renaissance got under way in December, 2009, with the inauguration of the Giorgione House Museum. Now you can see the artist’s works in the cultural context in which he lived.
His lyrical vision comes alive through the paintings, architectural environments and reconstructions seen there. The festivities continue until april 2010.
In the city where Giorgione was born his early works are reunited with the master himself. It is here you can admire some of the masterpieces of his first period together with those of the great artists that created this amazing era in Renaissance art: from Giovanni Bellini to Lorenzo Costa; from Carpaccio to Perugino, from Sebastiano del Piombo to Palma il Vecchio, concluding with Leonardo, Raphael and Tiziano.
Major national and international museums contributed works from their own collections to pay tribute to the great master of Castelfranco Veneto. They include the Louvre; the National Gallery of London; the Hermitage of St. Petersburg; the Uffizi Museum of Florence; the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana of Milan; and others. This is a unique opportunity for you to solve the eternal puzzle, the fascinating mystery of how culture and context combine to inspire timeless art and eternal beauty.
