S.Antonio from Padua

ricog1350On the occasion of the return of the body of Saint Antonio to the altar of the Chapel of the Ark, the faithful can view and venerate his mortal remains from Monday through Saturday, February 15-20, 2010. Temporarily transferred to the Chapel of San Giacomo during the complex and intricate work of restoring the 16th century Capella dell’Arca to its original beauty, the holy relic will remain on view for one week.

The day for the moving the saint’s remains was carefully chosen: February 15 marks the liturgical Feast of San Antonio (also called Feast of the Tongue), celebrated in the Basilica annually in memory of the first relocating of his Body, which took place on April ,8 1263 . to work of St. Bonaventure and that of 1350, when the tomb of the Holy had its final accommodation in the current chapel ark.

The display will continue throughout the week and will follow this schedule:

The faithful will have free access to the Chapel of Relics (also called The Treasury) from Monday through  Saturday, February 15-20, to venerate the body of San Antonio during the hours the Basilica is open: 6:15 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. (8:00 p.m. on Saturday). Visitors will enter through the side door by Via Cesarotti and exit via the Magnolia Cloister. Those who wish to participate in the daily liturgy will enter as usual from the doors on main facade of the Basilica.

Sunday February 21: The Feast of the Relocating of the Relics. The high point of the ceremony will be an address by the Papal Delegate, Monsignor Francesco Gioia at 11:00 a.m. and at the 5:00 p.m. Mass. The Provincial Minister of the Frati Minori Conventuali will chair the proceedings. The Mass will include the traditional procession within the Basilica with the relic of San Antonio.

Religious pilgrims and devotees of San Antonio will view the body of S. Antonio at repose within a glass structure. The last canonical canonical recognition of San Antonio occurred 29 years ago, in January 1981, 750 years after the death of the Saint. It was followed by a memorable exposition that lasted until March 1, 1981.

Information regarding pilgrimages, reservations or celebrations, etc., is available from the Basilica’s Information Office. E-mail: infobasilica@santantonio.org. Telephone: 049.8789722, fax 049.8789735.
